Khar Dal (Raw Papaya and Masoor Dal)


  • 300 gm raw papaya, cut into cubes
  • 100 gm masoor dal (red lentils), washed and soaked for 30 minutes
  • 1 tbsp crushed garlic
  • 2 green chillies, slit
  • 3 tbsp of chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 tbsp mustard oil
  • 1/2 cup Khar (water filtered through smoked banana peels)

Method –

  1. Pressure cook the dal and papaya for 2-3 whistles
  2. Heat oil in a wok
  3. Add the crushed garlic
  4. Add the Khar and let it boil
  5. Add the dal and papaya
  6. Stir for 2 minutes and add salt to taste
  7. Add warm water and let it boil
  8. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes
  9. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and green chillies

Note –

Can add a pinch of soda bicarbonate instead of Khar. The soda bicarbonate has to be added in the pressure cooker at the time of cooking the papaya and dal
