Masor Tenga (Assamese Tomato Fish Curry)


  • 250-300 gm Rohu fish, marinated with 1 tsp turmeric powder and 1/2 tsp salt for 10 minutes
  • 2-3 tbsp mustard oil
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 3-4 tomatoes
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 2 slit green chillies
  • Chopped coriander leaves
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon

Method –

  1. Peel the tomato skin and roughly chop them
  2. Grind in a chopper into a purée. Set aside
  3. Heat oil in a frying pan
  4. Fry the fish lightly and set aside
  5. In the same oil, add fenugreek seeds and let it crackle
  6. Add the tomato purée and cook for a few minutes till oil separates
  7. Add the turmeric powder, chilli powder, salt and sauté for a minute
  8. Pour the hot water and let it boil for 2-3 minutes
  9. Lower the heat, add the fried fish pieces and cook for 5-7 minutes
  10. Add green chillies, coriander leaves and give a quick stir
  11. Turn off the heat and squeeze the lemon juice
  12. Serve with piping hot steamed rice
