Aloo Begun Bori Diye Catla Maacher Jhol (Fish Curry with Brinjal, Lentil Dumplings and Potatoes)


  • 3 pieces catla fish
  • 6-7 boris
  • 1 medium potato, cut lengthwise
  • 1 small brinjal, cut lengthwise
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp nigella seeds
  • 2 fresh green chillies, slit
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp mustard oil

Method –

  1. Marinate the fish with salt and turmeric powder and set aside for 15 minutes
  2. Heat oil in a wok
  3. Lightly fry the fish and set aside
  4. Fry the boris till dark brown and set aside
  5. Add the nigella seeds and green chillies
  6. Immediately add the potatoes and stir fry on high heat
  7. Lower heat, add turmeric powder, salt and a little water
  8. Cover and cook till the potatoes are half done
  9. Add the brinjal pieces. If needed, add more water
  10. Cover and cook. After 5 minutes, add the tomatoes
  11. Cover and cook again till the vegetables are soft
  12. Add the fish and boris and cover again
  13. Simmer for about 10 minutes. Check the consistency of the gravy and serve hot
